About the Trainer

​

Krystal Skaggs is a graduate of Texas A&M, Commerce, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Masters in Counseling.  She has 26 years of experience working in education, 15 of which have been as a school counselor and 7 as a behavior specialist at a DAEP and K-12 campuses.  Krystal has worked in a variety of settings in her professional career giving her a unique insight into the needs of students and the obstacles they face in school and in life.  Krystal provides training services for Rainbow Days, Inc., a character education program, and for a regional education service center.  She is also a Licensed

Professional Counselor and currently pursuing her chemical dependency counselor licensure (LCDC).

Trauma & Kids:  Growing Resiliency

Join me to identify the types of trauma that children experience and the impact on their mental health and growth.  Once we can label trauma, we are far more capable of understanding how to help children begin to recover.

Objectives:

1.  Participants will be able to define trauma.

2.  Participants will understand what trauma looks like.

3.  Participants will recognize ways to help children affected by trauma.

 

Social-Emotional Health & Learning

A valuable workshop to define the 5 competencies of academic, social, and emotional learning.  Brain basics will be addressed, learning how we process emotions and respond to stress.  We will explore ACE’s (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and the traumatic events associated with them. Self-Regulation for children is our goal!

Objectives:

1.  Participants will gain an understanding of ACE’s.

2.  Participants will learn how the brain develops after trauma and responds to emotions.

3.  Participants will identify the 5 competencies that build strong, social-emotional health.

 

Trauma Informed Approach for Educators

Trauma is all around us!  And trauma shows itself in a variety of ways, behavior being one.  Let’s discover how trauma and toxic stress impact us and effective strategies we can use to help ourselves as well as those around us.  

Objectives:

1. Participants will identify toxic stress on the body.

2. Participants will learn actionable strategies to utilize with children.

 

Power Struggles vs. Setting Limits

 Don’t let power struggles become your kryptonite.  Join me to learn how to avoid picking up the rope!  Rise above the ashes and master how to set effective limits.

Objectives:

1.  Participants will recognize power struggles and how to avoid them.

2.  Participants will learn how to develop relationships with others.

3.  Participants will learn strategies for setting effective limits.

 

The Power of Positive Relationships

“With great power comes great responsibility.”  Did you know there is a direct link between academic achievement and emotional literacy?  Come explore the power of positive relationships and the implications it has on social-emotional learning.

Objectives:

1.  Participants will gain an understanding of social-emotional learning.

2. Participants will learn strategies for building positive relationships.

 

Growth Mindset

Explore the value of effort and how mistakes help us learn.  Utilize setbacks as motivation and find how courage can help develop a growth mindset and improve resilience.  Also, discover how a growth mindset relates to our interactions and relationships with children.

Objectives:

1. Participants will identify the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset.

2. Participants will identify the growth model.

 

Emotions Get the Best of Us!

A workshop to gain an understanding of BIG emotions and how those impact our lives. Discover theories behind emotions and how emotional intelligence plays a factor in our ability to perceive, control, and regulate emotions.  

Objectives:

1.  Participants will identify the 4 components of emotions.

2. Participants will recognize primary and secondary emotions.

3. Participants will gain an understanding of emotional intelligence and the 4 components of EI.

Please Place Your Oxygen Mask on First!

Flight attendants ask us to put on our own oxygen mask first before assisting others. We cannot continue to care for others if our bodies and minds are not functioning well.  Many of us are doing the best we can with what we have.  Recognize the many stressors of life and gain the knowledge of how to be good to yourself so you can be good for others.  

Objectives:

1. Participants will identify stressors.

2. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of self-care.

3. Participants will learn actionable strategies to manage stress.

De-escalating Behaviors

How you respond to behavior is often the key to defusing it. Learn strategies that will help you respond to challenging behavior in the most effective way possible. 

Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn strategies for dealing with individuals who are anxious, hostile, or noncompliant.

  2. Participants will recognize effective responses to defensive behavior.

  3. Participants will learn trauma-informed strategies to de-escalate behaviors.
